Family Photo Shoot Tips for Parents
This is for all the parents out there!
Gearing up for a family photo shoot can be pretty exciting but also a bit stressful at the same time.
Getting those rambunctious kiddos dressed and out the door can be, to say the least, a bit of a challenge.
Don’t worry though, I’ve got you covered!
As a family photographer in Calgary who’s worked with so many families, I have picked up some tips and tricks for you to help make your next session a smoother experience.
1. Embrace the Chaos
Let’s be real! It’s going to be a bit chaotic.
That’s perfectly fine!
We might have some cranky feelings, hair might not be perfect, and it might take a bit longer to get ready than you like but just embrace it, and go with the flow.
Stay cool and calm, and remember, just live life in the moment without too much worry and it will all work out.

2. Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time
Choosing outfits can be a bit tricky but we’ve got some tips to make it easier.
Coordinate, Don’t Match: Pick a color palette and have everyone wear outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Think about the setting and season when choosing colors.
Comfort is Key: Make sure everyone is comfortable in their outfits. If your kids hate wearing formal clothes, opt for something more casual.
Avoid Busy Patterns and Logos: These can be distracting in photos. Stick to solids or simple patterns.
Bring Backup: Accidents happen, especially with little ones. Have a change of clothes handy just in case.

3. Schedule Smart
Give yourself lots of time!
Timing is everything when it comes to family photo shoots. Here are a few things to consider:
Getting Ready: Start getting ready at least a couple hours before your photo shoot so you’re not having to rush.
Plan Ahead: Get your outfits ready at least a few days before, and pack whatever you need in advance.
Nap and Meal Times: Avoid scheduling the shoot during nap times or when the kids are usually hungry. A well-rested and well-fed child is a happy child.
Flexibility: If you have younger children, be flexible with the timing. Sometimes a little extra time to let them warm up to the camera can make a big difference.
4. Bring Essentials
It’s a good idea to pack some essentials for the photo shoot.
Snacks and Water: You never know when kids will get hungry or thirsty, especially after a fun filled photo shoot running around a park.
Favorite Toys or Blankets: Bring toys that will make your kids smile or something familiar that is comforting and reminds them of home.
Wipes and Tissues: For those little runny noses and unexpected messes.
Touch-Up Kit: At least a hair brush, some hair ties, and perhaps even some makeup for last minute touch ups.
5. Make it Fun
Just have fun with it!
The more fun you have, the more enjoyable the experience will be.
Play Games: Get the kids engaged with a game of tag, or play peek-a-boo to get some smiles and their spirits up. Bubbles is always a fun option!
Be Silly: Don’t be afraid to be silly and let loose. Photo shoots are supposed to be fun!
Positive Reinforcement: Praise and encourage your kids throughout the shoot. Compliments and high-fives can go a long way in keeping spirits high.

6. Trust Your Photographer
Remember, you hired a professional for a reason!
Trust your photographer to guide you through the process. They know how to work with families and will have plenty of tricks up their sleeve to get those perfect shots.
Let Them Lead: Follow their direction and let them work their magic.
Be Open to Suggestions: Sometimes the best shots come from spontaneous ideas.
Relax and Enjoy: Your photographer is there to capture your family’s unique dynamic, so relax and enjoy the experience.
7. Involve Your Kids in the Process
Give your kids a part to play for the photo shoot. It will make them feel like they have a say and be more cooperative.
Let Them Choose an Outfit: Give them a couple of outfits to pick from.
Ask for Input: Ask them if there’s a particular pose or activity they’d like to do during the shoot.
Explain the Process: Let them know what to expect and why you’re doing the photo shoot. Kids are often more cooperative when they understand the situation.
8. Capture the Moments In-Between
Some of the best photos come from just the simple life moments.
Natural Interactions: Feel free to interact with each other, laugh, play, or even have some quiet moments. They all make for some beautiful photos.
Emotional Connections: Spread around some love, kisses, and connection between each other. Those genuine moments are priceless.
Everyday Actions: Go for a walk together holding hands, or have a tickle fight!

9. Be Patient and Stay Positive
Patience is key during a family photo shoot.
Things might not go exactly as planned, and that’s perfectly fine. Keep a positive attitude and stay patient:
Take Breaks: If someone (especially the kids) needs a break, take one. A few minutes of downtime can make a big difference.
Stay Calm: Your kids will pick up on your energy. If you’re stressed, they’ll likely feel it too. Stay calm and positive.
Celebrate the Wins: Every smile and every cooperative moment is a win.
10. Enjoy the Experience
Last but not least, enjoy the experience!
A family photo shoot is not just about getting the perfect picture; it’s about spending time together and creating memories:
Focus on the Moment: Be present and enjoy the time with your family.
Create Memories: Think of the photo shoot as a fun family activity rather than a chore.
Look Forward to the Photos: Remember that these photos will be treasured keepsakes. The effort you put in now will be worth it when you look back on these moments.
Conclusion
Family photo shoots can be a lot of fun with a bit of preparation and the right mindset. Embrace the chaos, make it fun, and trust your photographer to capture those precious moments. With these tips, you’ll be ready to make the most of your session and create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
Remember, the best photos come from genuine smiles and real moments. So, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the experience.
